Shortly after his appointment as Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell indulged in a hyperbolic eulogy regarding the “glorious diversity” of the CofE.

On a recent BBC Radio 4 edition of the “Sunday” programme, often excellent, the presenter was Ms E.Buchanan. Her choice of clerical representative was the Rt. Rev.Philip North. The discussion focused on the succession to Welby. An Oxford College Principal, an active Anglican, noted that Bishop North was opposed to women priests; and had been consecrated by 3 bishops, each opposed to women priests.

One – if my memory serves me correctly -was the now disgraced Rt. Rev. Glyn Webster.

Footnote on Glyn: in fine words, Cottrell told Matthew Ineson that no further action would be taken against Glyn Webster as he was leaving the ministry . Cottrell then appointed the retired Glyn Vicar of All Saints’ Church in North Street, York where, aged 73, he remains to this day. Mr. Ineson’s judgment on Stephen Cottrell?

I did a New Wine course as an Anglican trainee and was commissioned as an evangelist in 2017. But 2 out of 5 trainees in my year departed after feeling falsely accused of sexual misconduct in crude language. A fellow student alleged how these words upset him profoundly: “Any of us might fancy a change breasts”. An Archbishop level cleric, a professor and a senior schoolmistress were affronted at the student bullying. One victim cried for well over an hour in my living room. I reported the bullying to an Archbishop. They reported this to a Bishop. The Bishop, oddly, passed the matter to a New Wine senior leader. A ‘conflict of interest’? No formal inquiry has ever followed. Kangaroo Court Justice prevails in Anglicanism! .
